The real gate

What language level do you actually need?

The visa is a matter of weeks. The language is a matter of a year or more. Nearly everyone who loses a year to this loses it the same way: they research routes first, choose one, and only then find out it needs B1 — starting from nothing.

Find the level your own profession requires, see what that level really means, and get an honest range for the hours and the money. Every requirement on this page comes from our destination data with its official source. Where we had to estimate, we say so and we show you the working.

What level do I actually need?

Three taps. The answer is the level recorded for your profession in our destination data, with the note and the source behind it. Where our data records no level, it says so rather than guessing one for you.

1 · Where are you going?

Germany is the only destination we have published language requirements for. We will not add a country until every requirement on it is sourced.

2 · Which route are you on?
3 · What is your profession or path?

Not listed? We only publish professions that appear on an official shortage or recognition list for this destination. Your trade may still be in demand — we just have no sourced figure for it, so we say nothing.

The level you need

Not stated

Master's degree · Germany · student route

Our data records no specific required level for this profession, so we will not give you one. That is a gap in our data, not permission to skip the language.

Many master's programmes are taught in English. You can be admitted with no German at all — and then struggle to find part-time work or stay on afterwards without it.

The route minimum is a different number

This is what the authority needs to let you in. It is usually lower than what an employer needs to hire you.

What each level actually means

B1 is not “intermediate”. B1 is the level at which you can describe a fault and be understood on a phone call. That is the only description worth having.

Tap a level to see what it actually means

B1 · You can work. Slowly, with mistakes, but you can work.

At B1 you can

  • Describe a fault, a job and what you did about it
  • Follow spoken instructions on a site or in a workshop
  • Take a phone call about work and get the key facts right
  • Hold a job interview in German, imperfectly
  • Read a work roster, a safety sheet and an official letter with effort

At B1 you still cannot

  • Handle a tense or emotional conversation reliably
  • Work in care or medicine, where a misunderstanding is a safety event
  • Follow a fast meeting between native speakers

What B1 unlocks in our data

  • Route minimum. Vocational training (Ausbildung) (Germany): German language, usually B1 or B2 depending on the trade and the employer
  • Required in practice for: Ausbildung (vocational training) — Germany, student; Electrician — Germany, trades; HVAC / AC technician — Germany, trades; Plumber — Germany, trades; Motor vehicle mechanic — Germany, trades; Truck driver — Germany, trades; Chef / cook — Germany, trades; Welder — Germany, trades.

How long it takes and what it costs

Nobody can tell you exactly how long B1 will take you. We can tell you what the taught hours are, what we assume about the rest, and what happens to the calendar at the pace you can really manage. The assumptions are written out underneath, not hidden.

Where are you now?

What a course costs, from our destination data

These are the figures we publish on the destination pages. They are course costs to B1, not costs for the exact jump you selected above, and we will not scale them to your selection because we have no sourced basis for doing that.

German course to B1 (required for Ausbildung, optional for English-taught degrees)Germany · Student · paid by workerEUR 1,500 – 5,000
German language course to B1Germany · Trades · paid by variesEUR 1,500 – 5,000
German course to B1 (optional for the permit, decisive for your career)Germany · Service · paid by variesEUR 1,500 – 5,000

Across everything we publish, a German course to B1 runs EUR 1,500 to EUR 5,000. The exam fee is separate and you pay it to the exam body, not to a school.

Exactly what is sourced here, and exactly what we assumed

  • Sourced. Taught hours per level come from the Goethe-Institut course structure: 75 teaching units for each of A1, A2 and B1, and 85 for each of B2 and C1. A teaching unit is 45 minutes. We converted units to hours and added them up.
  • Our assumption. We assume 3 to 5 hours of your own study for every hour of class. Nobody publishes an official figure for this, because it depends entirely on the learner. The low end assumes you study well and without interruption. The high end assumes a full-time job, missed weeks and at least one restart, which is what most readers of this site actually have.
  • Our assumption. Calendar months are your total hours divided by your weekly hours, at 4.33 weeks a month. It makes no allowance for holidays, illness, a course that does not start when you need it to, or the gap between finishing a level and getting an exam slot. Add time for all four.
  • No published figure. The course structure we use gives no module length for C2. We reuse the C1 figure for C2 so the tool does not break. No route on this site requires C2 and you should not be buying it.
  • What this is not. This is a planning range, not a promise. If anybody gives you a single confident number for how long B1 takes you, they have not met you.

What German is worth in points, for the trades

On the German Opportunity Card, German is the most controllable item on the whole points table. A2 is one point, B1 is two, B2 or above is three. Move the level and watch the total. For many people, one level is the whole difference between no and yes.

Your German today

No GermanTotal would be 4 of 60
A1Total would be 4 of 60
A2Your level today+1
B1Total would be 6 of 6+2
B2 or aboveTotal would be 7 of 6+3
5of 6 points needed
On these answers you are 1 point short.

Moving from A2 to B1 takes you from 5 to 6 and crosses the threshold. On these answers, that one level is the difference between no and yes.

Everything else is held at a plain baseline: non-EU passport, two years of training, no shortage occupation, no English certificate, no previous residence in Germany, no qualifying partner, funds in place.

How to actually learn it

Four honest options, with what goes wrong in each. We name no provider and recommend no course, because we take no money from workers and none from schools.

Four ways to do it. Tap one.

Free apps, free videos, a textbook, and a study partner you find yourself.

What works

  • Costs almost nothing, so a failed start costs you nothing
  • Fits around shift work
  • Gets you through A1 and much of A2 perfectly well

What goes wrong

  • Nobody corrects your speaking, so errors set hard and are expensive to undo later
  • Most people stall between A2 and B1 and cannot tell why
  • You still have to pay an accepted exam body for the certificate

Right for

Starting now, this week, before you have money or a plan.

Wrong for

Getting from B1 to B2 for care or medical work. That needs correction.

Cost shape

Near zero for learning. You still pay the exam fee.

We name no school, no app and no course anywhere on this site. We take no money from workers and no money from providers, so we have nothing to sell you and no reason to point you at one company over another. Judge a provider on whether a teacher corrects your speaking, and on whether the certificate at the end comes from a body the authority accepts.

The expensive mistakes

These are the ones that cost real money and real months. None of them is exotic and all of them are avoidable. Tap any one to see the rule behind it and its source.

What happensThe German visa procedure accepts certificates only from a short list of named exam bodies, and only where the test follows the Association of Language Testers in Europe standards. A certificate from a local school, however good the teaching was, is not accepted as proof — the Federal Foreign Office states this explicitly, including for schools approved to run integration courses inside Germany.

What it costs youThe exam fee, plus the months of waiting for a re-sit with an accepted body, plus any application you submitted on the strength of it.

Do this insteadBefore you pay any exam fee, check that the body issuing the certificate is on the accepted list, and check it on the embassy or Federal Foreign Office page, not on the school's own page.

The exam bodies the German visa procedure accepts

These are the bodies named by the authority. We recommend none of them, we have no relationship with any of them, and we list them only so you can check a certificate before you pay for it. The test must follow the Association of Language Testers in Europe standards, and certificates from other language schools are not accepted — the Federal Foreign Office says so explicitly, including for schools approved to run integration courses inside Germany.

  • Goethe-Institut e.V.
  • telc GmbH
  • Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (ÖSD)
  • TestDaF-Institut e.V. (from level B2 only)
  • ECL
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD)

Check this list on the embassy or Federal Foreign Office page yourself before you pay any exam fee. Lists change, and a school's own page is not evidence.

The order that actually works

Start the language this week

At the cheapest level of commitment you can find. A1 costs you almost nothing to begin and it is the one thing on this list that cannot be hurried later.

Start recognition at the same time

Recognition of your qualification runs for months and runs in parallel with studying. On the points table it is worth more than German is.

Research the route while you study

Route research takes weeks and can be done on your phone in the evenings. Doing it first, alone, is what costs people the year.

Book the exam last, with an accepted body

Sit it inside the year before you will actually submit your application, directly with a body the authority accepts. You never need an agent to sit a language exam.

This page is free and always will be

We are not a language school, a recruitment agency or a visa consultancy. If anyone offers you a certificate without an exam, or a guaranteed level for a fee, that is fraud — here is how to check an agent. Every figure we publish and the date we last checked it is on our sources page.
