Germany for service
Fastest route of the three — if you clear the salary threshold.
For professionals, Germany is straightforward in a way the other two tracks are not: clear the salary number with a recognised degree and a job offer, and the EU Blue Card follows, with family reunification and a fast path to permanent residence. There is no points system and no language requirement to get in. The catch is that the threshold is a hard number, it rises every year, and Indian and Nigerian salary expectations at mid-career often sit below it. Check the number before you check anything else. If your offer is below it, the Blue Card is simply not available to you, however strong your CV is.
Where you stand
Make this page about you
5 paths are named in Germany's official demand list, ranked below.
What Germany wants, in its own order
This order is the official shortage analysis, not our opinion. The source is linked under the list.
Software engineer
IT specialists can qualify for the reduced salary threshold even without a formal degree, which is the single most generous concession in the German system.
Mechanical engineer
STEM occupations qualify for the reduced salary threshold as a shortage occupation.
Electrical engineer
STEM occupation, eligible for the reduced threshold.
Doctor
Healthcare is named among the shortage fields for the reduced threshold, but medical practice additionally requires a licence to practise (Approbation), which is a separate and slower process than the visa.
Registered nurse
Nursing is a regulated profession: full recognition of the qualification is required before you can work as a registered nurse rather than an assistant.

The routes
Each route below is a separate permit with its own hard requirements. Failing any one requirement means that route is closed to you, however strong the rest of your case is.
EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU)
OpenA residence permit for university graduates with a qualifying job offer above a set salary threshold.
Who this is for
- Graduates with a recognised university degree and a German job offer

- A university degree recognised or comparable in Germany, or for IT specialists, substantial relevant professional experience
- A concrete German job offer or employment contract matching your qualification

- Or at least EUR 45,934.20 if you work in a listed shortage occupation, are an IT specialist without a degree, or graduated less than three years ago — but this lower threshold additionally requires the approval of the Federal Employment Agency, which the general threshold does not
- The listed shortage occupations are broader than STEM and healthcare: they also include several manager categories, architecture and planning, veterinarians, dentists, pharmacists, nursing and midwifery, and teachers
- No German language requirement for the permit itself

With an offer in hand this is the quickest of the three tracks: degree comparability and the visa appointment are the main waits. Without an offer, add the job search itself, which from outside Germany is where most of the time goes.

The longest item on anybody's list. It decides your start date more than the visa does.
No German is legally required for the Blue Card. In practice, German decides whether you are promoted, not whether you are hired.
Degree comparability via anabin is the step people forget to start early.
Everything the published cost list adds up to, including deposits that come back to you.
Start to arrival, as the official timeline note states it. Not the visa stamp alone.
“Lower bar” means fewer requirements or less time or money on that one line only. It is not advice on which is better for you. Money and timeline figures are the whole published range for that country and track, not for this path alone.
