Germany for trades
Open. Language is the real gate, not the visa.
Germany is the most open large economy for skilled trades right now. The visa is not the hard part. The hard part is German, and recognition of your qualification. Most people who fail do not fail at the embassy. They fail because they underestimated how long B1 takes, or because their training was shorter than two years and no amount of experience fixed that. Plan for language first and everything else becomes manageable. One warning that catches people out: Germany keeps two different "shortage" lists and they have nothing to do with each other. The Federal Employment Agency's Engpassanalyse, which is what the ranking below comes from, measures which trades employers cannot fill. The separate Mangelberufe list in § 18g of the residence act, which lowers the EU Blue Card salary threshold, contains only managerial and professional groups and no trades at all. Being in shortage as a welder does not put you on the Blue Card list.
Where you stand
Make this page about you
8 trades are named in Germany's official demand list, ranked below.
What Germany wants, in its own order
This order is the official shortage analysis, not our opinion. The source is linked under the list.
Electrician
Construction electronics and electrical operating technology are both named by the Federal Employment Agency among the skilled trades with shortages.
HVAC / AC technician
Plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology is named by the Federal Employment Agency as a shortage trade area.
Plumber
Covered by the same named shortage area as heating and air conditioning: Anlagenmechaniker SHK.
Motor vehicle mechanic
Automotive technology is named by the Federal Employment Agency as a skilled trade with shortages.
Truck driver
Berufskraftfahrer (Güterverkehr) is an Engpassberuf in the Federal Employment Agency's 2025 analysis, with one of the clearest shortage scores on the list.
Chef / cook
Köche (cooks) are listed as an Engpassberuf in the 2025 analysis, though at the threshold of the scale rather than deep into it — a shortage, not a severe one.
Welder
Welding has no occupation code of its own in the analysis. The nearest published measure is metalworking (Berufe im Metallbau), which sits at the threshold of the shortage scale. Treat this as indicative of the trade area, not as a figure for welders specifically.
Care worker
Care is Germany's largest single recognition category by volume. Full nursing recognition is a separate and longer process than care assistant work.

The routes
Each route below is a separate permit with its own hard requirements. Failing any one requirement means that route is closed to you, however strong the rest of your case is.

What it actually costs
The same EUR 75 whichever route you apply on. Minors pay half. The residence permit issued after you arrive costs up to EUR 100 more.

How long it really takes
12 to 30 months
The visa itself is a matter of weeks. Reaching B1 from zero typically takes 9 to 18 months of consistent study, and recognition runs in parallel but can take several months longer. Anyone promising you Germany in three months is selling something.
Compare before you commit

Whether the country is taking new applicants from overseas right now.
The longest item on anybody's list. It decides your start date more than the visa does.
B1 is the practical working minimum. Some employers accept A2 on arrival if you commit to B1 within months, but recognition bodies and safety-critical work push this higher.
If recognition is required by law, you cannot work in the job until it is finished.
Everything the published cost list adds up to, including deposits that come back to you.
Start to arrival, as the official timeline note states it. Not the visa stamp alone.
“Lower bar” means fewer requirements or less time or money on that one line only. It is not advice on which is better for you. Money and timeline figures are the whole published range for that country and track, not for this path alone.
